CHAPTER SIX

HER PHONE BEEPED annoyingly and then rang.

Skye sat straight up in bed. The only person who would phone her at this time was her mother.

It took a few seconds for realisation to swamp her like a tidal wave. It couldn’t be her mum. Her mum was gone.

So, who could be calling her?

Her brain started to shift into gear. A major incident at the hospital. That was the only reason she would get a call.

She answered immediately. ‘Skye Carter.’

‘Major incident alert at The Harlington. Please report for duty.’

It wasn’t a real voice. The call was automated, but Skye was out of bed, stripping off her pyjamas and pressing the remote on the TV to see if anything was reported as she dressed.

She washed her face, brushed her teeth and pulled on her scrubs in under three minutes. By the time she was sticking her feet into her trainers she could see the yellow ticker tape line scrolling along the bottom of the news feed.

Train derailment in London. Major incident alert.

Her heart sank like a stone as she grabbed her bag and headed to the door. There wasn’t time to watch the rest of the news to see where the incident had occurred.

As she jogged along the street it was still dark. The pavements glistened with frost. The roads had pink, purple and green fluorescence, as if oil had been spilled, but likely meant that ice had formed on them.

It would soon be Christmas. Skye couldn’t help but fret over how many families’ lives might be about to change because of this major incident.

As she reached the crossroads at the bottom of her street, someone gave a wave and stopped their car. Skye opened the passenger door and climbed in gratefully.

Julie, a radiologist, lived about a mile away and had clearly been called in too. ‘Should have called you,’ said Julie as soon as she pulled the car away again. ‘Haven’t really woken up yet though.’

‘Me neither,’ said Skye. ‘Heard anything else?’

Julie shook her head. ‘Feeling a bit sick to be truthful. Figured I wouldn’t turn the radio on in case it was full of rumours. I’ll just get a briefing when I get there.’

Skye’s phoned beeped again and she pulled it out of her pocket.

Need me to come and get you?

It was Lucas. All staff had been called.

She texted quickly back.

Got a lift, see you there.

Julie shot her a glance. ‘Hospital?’

Skye shook her head and answered without thinking. ‘One of the docs offering me a lift. He lives really close to The Harlington.’

The words seemed to wake Julie up. ‘Lucas Hastings?’

Skye looked at her in surprise. ‘How do you know that?’

Julie laughed. ‘There’s been rumours about you two for the past few weeks. Darn, wish I’d put a bet on now.’

Skye’s stomach did a full forward roll. ‘Tell me people are not placing bets on this?’

Julie shrugged. ‘You know how the hospital goes. Anyhow, nothing serious, just a box of doughnuts or a round of drinks.’ Her hand hit the steering wheel as she sighed.
